Abstract: This text attempts to survey the studies on the history of international economic relations in Portugal. To begin with, it states, in a more general analysis, that the research on the history of international economic relations in Portugal has focussed mainly on the history of the international economic relations of Portugal and clearly less on the history of the international economic system in general. Next, it considers the main theses presented on three topics: the role of Portugal in the formation of the world international economic system; the consequences of the economic relations of Portugal with the center of the international economic system for the structural evolution of the Portuguese economy; and the consequences of the economic relations of Portugal with the periphery of the international economic system for this same structural evolution.
