Abstract:
This article presents a synthesis of discussions opposing contrasting interpretations concerning the economy of pharaonic Egypt - Marxist, Polanyian (substantivism) and economic formalist - presented since about 1970. The author next develops his own opinions, contrary to the economically formalist views of ancient societies. This is done by emphasizing labor as an economic factor, with regard to which some analyses based on original research are presented.
