Abstract: This paper examines the contents of the Economic Journal during its first century as a prelude to speculating about the likely development of economics during the next century. The conclusion is that the issues dealt with will remain much the same and so will many of the substantive conclusions. However, the techniques employed in analyzing them, and the language in which they are presented, will be very different. In addition, the range of subjects covered will broaden as specialization continues to increase and professionalization continues to deepen. Copyright 1991 by Royal Economic Society.
