Correctly Critiquing Casino-Crime Causality

Earl L. Grinols and David B. Mustard

Econ Journal Watch, 2008, vol. 5, issue 1, pages 21-31

Abstract: Professor Walker raises five concerns about our previous research on casinos and crime, published in the Review of Economics and Statistics. All of his concerns speak of potential problems and he includes no new results to provide evidence that the potential problems are actual problems or that they are important. We address each of his criticisms by documenting how we treated them in the working and published versions of our paper, and where appropriate, we elaborate on the concerns. Because he presents no new data, no new research, and his criticisms are largely addressed in our previous work, we have no reason to alter the conclusions of our existing research.
