Abstract:
A diverse resource base provides desirable opportunities for India to move towards energy self-sufficiency, more popularly called energy security, against the rising odds in the globalizing world. Intra-national competition from different sectors and international competition from different countries put the nation on its toes to meet the rising demands. The awareness of health issues emanating from the use of depletable and polluting resources accentuates the demand for clean fuels. Meeting the country’s commercial energy demand, which is expected to increase three-fold by 2010, over the 1990 demand, is not a difficult task, given its sound resource base, prospects for new oil and gas fields, and the non-renewable and renewable stocks. While its import dependence is reflected in the Balance of Payment (BOP), the current independent and joint energy policies for overseas and internal exploration are structured to enhance the energy security. All these are highly interdependent and need a comprehensive and integrated approach for greater viability.
