During the last twenty five years Colombia has gone through an accelerated and contradictory process of social, economic and political transformations; among them, those related to the educational system are prominent. The scholarity rate has grown very quickly and higher education has a good stake of it. This article tries to present a diagnosis of the evolution of the Colombian universities system during the period already mentioned It emphasizes the large amount of resources devoted to this level of education without any definition of development policies, resulting in the chaotic growth of this sector. That situation has produced results which are not adequate in terms of quality or real needs (cultural, economical or technical) of the country. 1n the context of this general framework we find some proposals which could modify, at least partially, the present state of the Colombian higher education.
