Abstract: The study analyzes the new legislative proposal regarding the terminology used for the Gypsy ethnics, highlighting that the subject of the right to choose one’s ethnic name belongs only to the ethnic group itself, as an expression of the person’s right to selfdetermination. Any public decision disregarding this right is deemed to be rejected by the ethnic group and by the European institutions as contrary to international law and to European values, as well.
