Abstract: Effectively managing human resources is a critical factor in achieving organizational success. Thus, many papers have been written on enhancing the skills and performance of sub-standard or mediocre employees. This article takes a different tack: how to successfully supervise competent workers in the organization. It is suggested that competent employees present their own unique set of challenges at work; challenges that can be met if the “ABC approach” is utilized with these individuals in the workplace. When it comes to human resource management in the workplace, one thing is certain: learning to effectively manage incompetent or marginally competent subordinates is critical to organizational success. But what about correctly overseeing competent employees? To this inquiry, some managers would respond: “What competent employees!?” or, less cynically, “I don’t worry about my competent subordinates, they know what to do and they do it.”
