Abstract:
Kawa Hassan explores the Arab Spring through the voice of Middle Eastern activists. He analyzes whether the riots and mobilization constitute a revolution, reform or just ‘refo-lution’. He examines the role of social media in the uprisings and concludes that although Twitter and Facebook played an important role in mobilizing people, they were not as significant as commonly portrayed by the western media. Hassan stresses the links between economic development and democratization, and suggests that there is a need to target political liberalization and economic development as part and parcel of one transition package that should aim at achieving responsive, inclusive and accountable political and economic systems.
