Abstract:
This essay offers some thoughts prompted by reading “Il calabrone Italia. Ricerche e ragionamenti sulla peculiarità economica italiana” that brings together some of the most significant articles by Giacomo Becattini on the Italian economy and industrial districts. A new unpublished chapter reviews the stages in the development of his research and theory. Becattini is recognized as a social scientist, seeking out links between the economy, society and culture. The essay concludes that development in theory and research on the industrial districts has opened up the topic of local development to a more general interest.
