Abstract:
The essay investigates the effects induced by the Post-Euro competitive environment on industry in Southern Italy. The approach considers a set of structural indicators - exports, FDI flows, size distribution of firms, productivity growth- in order to illustrate how the industrial system of the “Mezzogiorno” adapts to changes in the competitive environment. The findings reveal that industry in Southern Italy, following a pattern in contrast with the evolution observed elsewhere in the country, has progressively concentrated its competitive efforts in "scale-intensive" sectors. In the meanwhile, the indicators show a considerable increase in the mobility of labour.
