Abstract:
In this study we investigate the determinants of R&D activities of Swiss firms abroad and discuss the resulting explanation pattern in the light of the debate taking place at the time in economics with respect to the possibility of a positive (complementarity hypothesis) or a negative impact (substitutionality hypothesis) of internationalization of R&D activities on domestic R&D. The results of our study, which is based on firm data, hint to a positive impact of R&D internationalization, thus supporting the complementarity hypothesis.
