TECHNOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE IN MEAT PROCESSING AND IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY

Yin Xia and Steven Buccola

No 21862, 2000 Annual meeting, July 30-August 2, Tampa, FL from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: We develop a general model of processing cost, output demand, and factor demand in the U.S. meat processing industries, allowing for capital quasi-fixity and imperfectly competitive pricing. The model is used to analyze the sources and nature of size economies and technical change in the meat sector.
