The Effectiveness of Mandatory and Voluntary Water-Use Restrictions

Greg Halich, Kurt Stephenson and Christiana E. Hilmer

No 19327, 2005 Annual meeting, July 24-27, Providence, RI from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: Local water suppliers are increasingly faced with implementing policies to address temporary water shortages. This analysis estimates the reductions in residential water-use from the implementation of voluntary and mandatory water-use restrictions programs in Virginia. The level of information and enforcement was found to have a significant influence on the magnitude of water use reductions.
