Abstract: The Dutch greenhouse horticulture sector has for many years endeavoured to improve its energy efficiency. In 2003, the energy efficiency index (EE Index) improved by 1 percentage point to 51%. This improvement was due to increased yields per m2 at an unchanged primary fuel consumption per m2. Conversely, in 2003 the sector's CO2 emissions increased by 0.21 million tonnes to a total of 6.44 million tonnes. This increase is due to the sector's reduced ability to make use of power companies' residual heat and cogeneration-plant heat, as a result of which the sector was compelled to make more use of fossil fuels (natural gas). However, both the use of energy-saving options such as heat storage and movable screens and the number of energy-cluster projects continue to increase.
