Abstract: The paper investigates the relationship between economic growth and poverty reduction in Brazil during the period 1980s-1990s. It briefly reviews the literature on 'pro-poor growth', emphasizing the importance of certain qualitative aspects of growth responsible for enhancing human well-being in Brazil. The paper follows the methodology put forward by Ravallion and Datt (2000) to estimate the impact of economic growth on poverty reduction. It also replicates the study of Son (2004), calculating a growth poverty curve by income deciles for Brazil. The results show that only in the 1990s Brazilian states had pro-poor growth and that the poverty reduction effect was heterogeneous among different states.
