Abstract:
There has been increasing concern in Canada with respect to over-regulation; and specifically to what it means to smaller entities. Seeking to advance the understanding of the impacts of regulations on the SME sector, CGA-Canada commissioned a Small and Medium-sized Entities (SME) survey, a Practitioner survey, and held a public consultation on this topic. The results of the research show that individual regulatory requirements applicable to publicly-traded SMEs in Canada are seen as reasonable and fair (with the exception of securities requirements). However, the cumulative impact of regulation is a significant concern for SMEs while views toward the impacts of regulation vary between regions in Canada. Relative to other regulatory areas, securities regulations are of the greatest concern to publicly-traded SMEs in Canada.
