French Riots. An Economic Mess or the End of the Civic Illusion?

Mehmet Kalyoncu

Working Papers - Programa Europa from Argentine Center of International Studies

Abstract: The late surge of riots in almost every corner of France is certainly a French mess; however, it is likely to be both French mess and an unexpected collapse of the French civic illusion that turned out another mess and just exacerbated the whole mess. By definition of the Webster dictionary, what has happened in France in the last three weeks amounts precisely to a mess; a disordered, untidy, offensive, or unpleasant state or condition. By the end of the twentieth day of the riots on November 16th 2005, 126 members of the French Police were injured, the total number of cars torched and that of arrests amount respectively 8,973 and 2,888, and the monetary damage is estimated to be over 200 million euros. Tensions that started in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois have rapidly spead out affecting 274 communes in total
