No 13, Discussion Papers from United Nations University, Institute for New Technologies

Abstract: The external situation facing developing countries has changed markedly in the past decade in terms of increased international economic integration and accelerated technological change. In this context, the paper explores the role of technological factors in developing countries' efforts to become internationally competitive in manufactured exports. The results of an empirical analysis suggest that it is possible to discern different technological growth paths associated with the development of manufactured exports from developing countries. The implications of these different paths are discussed, and the distributional effects arising through the growth or stagnation of real wages are examined, together with aggregate employment effects, and especially the effects on women's employment.
