Human Capital Growth and Destruction

Peter Alders

No 97-128/3, Tinbergen Institute Discussion Papers from Tinbergen Institute

Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of exogenous fertility shocks on physical- and human capital accumulation in an OLG-framework. Negative shocks in fertility cause a relative scarcity in the future labor market and stimulate human capital accumulation. Adults can spend time for education of their children in their first period of adulthood or alternatively use their time for working, thereby increasing their human capital by learning-by-doing. The second period human capital level declines however when technical change is high.
