No 227, Trade Working Papers from East Asian Bureau of Economic Research

Abstract: This paper aims at providing a relative comprehensive analysis of the impact of China’s accession to the WTO on China’s economy, based on the China-US bilateral agreement on market accession which was made in November, 1999. We try to provide some empirical evidence for policy makers to evaluate the effects of China’s WTO accession both national and provincial prospective. This analysis mainly uses a 53-sector, 2-region recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of China. It investigates the impact of China’s WTO accession, quantitatively estimates the relevant benefit and cost, and helps to fully understand the challenge and opportunities it brings about to relevant parties.
