Notes on Economic Depreciation of Natural Resource Stocks and National Accounting

John M. Hartwick

Working Papers from Queen's University, Department of Economics

Abstract: We consider numerous variations on the theme that stock diminution weighted by marginal rent should be netted from basic NNP to account for economic depreciation of natural stocks. Mineral discoveries, durable exhaustible resources, and mining pollution effects are examined. Capital appreciation from transforming land in virgin forest to land in agriculture is considered. Attention is paid to second best prices.
