Employment Protection Legislation and Job Stability: An European Cross Country Analysis

Sandrine Cazes and Mirco Tonin ()

Discussion Paper Series In Economics And Econometrics from University of Southampton, Economics Division, School of Social Sciences

Abstract: This paper investigates the dynamics of job tenure in the European Union over the last decade. The analysis shows no generalized decrease in job tenure but a trend towards shorter tenure of young workers (15-24) in most European countries. Our results indicate that lower employment protection provided by law and by trade unions can explain this downward trend.
