Abstract:
Increasing attention has recently been given to analysing the regions on the basis of endogenous growth potential and as 'regional innovation systems' (Héraud 1994; Longhi and Quere 1994). On these bases this report will examine innovation activities and outputs at a regional level, discussing the importance of the region as a base for economic and technological activities of the firms located there. We have gathered information from 100 manufacturing firms operating in the administrative county of Finnmark in the farthest north of Norway. The findings in this report are empirical evidence from a survey based research methodology, together with results from interviews with firms and institutions in the region. The aim is to reveal characteristics of the 'regional innovation system' in Finnmark by focusing on the region as a source of firms' economic and technological activities.
