Populist Policies in the Transition to Democracy,
Daniel Mejia and Carlos Posada, from Banco de la Republica de Colombia (2005)
Keywords: This paper develops a political economy model that provides an explanation as for why ruling elites in oligarquic societies may rely on income redistribution to the poor (the masses) in order to prevent them from attempting a revolution. We refer to this kind of redistribution as populist redistribution because, first it does not increase the poor’s productive capacity (human capital), and second it seeks to “buy” political support (peace) to perpetuate the elite’s control of political power. We examine the conditions under which ruling elites choose to deter the poor (by means of military repression and/or populist redistribution), to engage in a dispute with the poor for the control of political power, or, alternatively, to extend democracy. According to the results of the model populist redistribution (or military repression), if any, increases with initial wealth inequality and with the amount of redistribution that the poor can undertake under democracy, and decreases with the relative importance of a human capital externality in production. The model explains why in some cases the use of an apparently ine cient policy of populist redistribution turns out to be optimal for both groups (the ruling elite and the poor class) when the alternative is to use of military repression or default to conflict.

Amplitude-Duration-Persistence Trade-off Relationship for Long Term Bear Stock Markets,
Ziran Li, Jiajing Sun and Shouyang Wang, from University Library of Munich, Germany (2013)
Keywords: We study the mechanism that controls the shape of the bear market through an information diffusion perspective, and establish a frontier of market decline, in terms of a trade-off between amplitude, duration and the rate of information diffusion. Empirical analysis using data from 15 stock markets confirms the existence of this trade-off relationship. An algorithm for generating the frontier using real data is proposed and applied in several market scenarios. The results suggest that the behaviour of international stock markets during the current US credit crunch is similar to that in previous bear markets in terms of the trivariate trade-off.

Caution Restructuring: The New Restrictive Jurisdictional Approach of ICSID Tribunals,
Alexandra Neacsu Monkhouse, in Estey Centre Journal of International Law and Trade Policy (2015)
Keywords: International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) tribunals have been accused of systemic impartiality and of favouring investors. In response to criticism, a new approach to jurisdiction has emerged. While, initially, tribunals liberally heard investment claims as long as a foreign entity could be identified in the corporate chain of the claimant, now arbitrators use the notions of corporate control and timing of restructuring to determine whether investors may legitimately access international arbitration. In the light of recent decisions, corporate restructuring can no longer be used as a safe method of accessing ICSID jurisdiction. This improves the balance between State and investor interests., Agribusiness, Agricultural Finance,

Benefits of Executing the Controlling Function Using Performance Management SystemsAbstract:In recent years, the market for on-demand CRM applications suffered especially in the segment of small and medium companies because of the concerns about the cost and the complexity of on request implementations. CRM on demand is a good choice for companies that want to implement standard processes that can use data structures "out of box" with little or not at all internal IT support and does not require complex or real-time integration with back office systems. However, on-demand CRM software is not always as simple as vendors want us to believe. Customizing can be problematic and interface tools of CRM vendors can not provide desired levels of integration. Implementing a hosted CRM system should not take so much as traditional software packages does, but with very large and complex variants it may take even a year. In addition, some companies that hold sensitive data such as financial services could refuse to entrust control of such data to third parties for security reasons. For these reasons, AMR Research believes that by 2012, hosted CRM applications market will be only 12 percent of the total CRM market,

WHAT MOTIVATES EMPLOYEES OF BANKING SYSTEM Abstract The relationship between people and their work has long attracted psychologists, behavioral scientists and, also, economic scientists.Early management theories suggested using financial compensation to impel motivation and job performance. The past two decades have seen tremendous growth in the use of goal setting and management by objectives programmers. More recently, cybernetic control, resource allocation, and social-cognitive theories have been used to examine more closely how particular attributes of a goal, a person and a situation influence goal striving and performance,

Dal Welfare State allo stato programmatore,
Archibugi Franco, in Economia & lavoro (2012)
Keywords: This paper is concerned with the outline of a new âsocialistâ policy, examined in the context of the structural evolutions of capitalism. The paper is composed of two parts. After a brief introduction to the general purpose of the essay, the first part (published in this Journal issue) develops an analysis of the structural transformations occurred in contemporary society, over all in respect of the production activities and the labour market. An examine of the specific characters of what has been called the âpost-industrialâ society will be done, in regard of the declining âindustrialâ one. And, in the same time, the consequences of the relative huge increasing of the role of the State that arose from it will be discussed. Moreover, the phenomena of bureaucratisation, social waste and occupational disease and crisis, on one hand, and the phenomena of chronic disequilibria of the government budget and the need of public expenditures control and results, on the other hand will be outlined.

Simultaneous Random effect models of poverty and Childbearing in Ethiopia,
Abbi Kedir, Arnstein Aassve and Tadesse Woldegebriel Habtu, in Ethiopian Journal of Economics (2005)
Keywords: The incidence and severity of poverty in urban and rural Ethiopia are similar – both extremely high. In contrast, urban and rural fertility rates differ substantially. Whereas the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in rural areas is as high as 5.5, it is as low as 1.9 in Addis Ababa. The declining fertility rate especially in the capital city is paradoxical to economic demographers. This paper analyses the complex relationship between childbearing and poverty in urban and rural Ethiopia. We model child bearing and poverty as joint random effect models, controlling for initial conditions. Using panel data for three (comparable) waves both for rural and urban Ethiopia, our analysis examines the inherent differences in the poverty and fertility relationship., Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Food Security and Poverty, Production Economics,
