Abstract:
Abstract Wars are economically inefficient because they destroy productive resources. Armed conflicts maim and kill people. However, wars are often credited for the development of modern nation-states. That warfare can cause a rise or decline of nations fosters interest in our understanding of its causes and consequences. The Russian–Ukrainian war is the largest international war fought on the European continent since World War II. This paper introduces a Public Choice symposium on Russia’s war in Ukraine. The symposium brings together a broad range of economists and political scientists to apply the rational-choice model to the analysis of interstate war from a public choice perspective.
