Abstract: The significant improvements in edge detection, vectorization, contour specification, and skeleton extraction that were made in the past years should be included in the document analysis pipeline. We discuss the general OCR system, introduce an edge detection specialized for characters, present a geometrical based preprocessing pipeline and open the door for further research in the communication of the OCR with the preprocessing stage.
