Structuration sociale et économique, liens et nécessité matériels dans une société de réciprocité: le cas des Balantes de la région de Tombali, Guinée-Bissau

Post-Print from HAL

Abstract: The Balantas of the Tombali region (in Guinea-Bissao) have a social system with constraints based on collective labour control and social re-allocation of richness and agricultural surpluses" according to reciprocity through religious or social events (Fanado and choro animist events). Our analysis shows that such system lack flexibility to adapt to new economic context and market regulations. The Collective "material interest" has been so far preserved due to this very particular social link, due to constraints of the main cropping system: mangrove rice. Interactions are many-fold and the system remains relatively fragile. The Balanta identity remains as well very strong based on nest of kin linkages that structure production systems based on clanic type extended family rather than the usual nuclear family farming system
