Abstract:
Walking and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. - What do we know about walking and African urban dwellers whose feet are their only daily mode of transport, sometimes for long distance trips? Finally, relatively little, since survey are traditionally focused on motorised modes. Using data from household surveys carried out in Sub-Saharan cities, we first show that walking is the principal transportation mode. Then, through the example of Niamey, we analyse the daily mobility of urban people who always travel on foot. They are mostly underprivileged individuals and their territory is usually limited to the immediate vicinity of their home. Taking into account the chronic shortage of financial means existing in these cities, we provide some ideas for a better acknowledgement of walking as a basic mode in the passenger transportation system and more generally, in the daily functioning of the overall urban system.
