Abstract:
In a number of African cities, a new form of transport is rapidly expanding, the motor bike-taxi. This means of public transport meets a large part of the daily travel needs but it also gives rise to critics from users, other public transport operators and authorities. This paper attempts i) to show that the development of motor bike-taxis represents a "by the bottom-up" response to the multiform crisis of cities and ii) to assess the current place of the motor bike-taxi in the urban transport sector and the daily travel system, its advantages and disadvantages. Our study is mainly based on fieldwork undertaken recently in Douala, i.e. interviews of inhabitants and moto-taxi drivers, a household survey on daily travel and an on-board survey.
