The Significance and Performance of United Kingdom REITs in a Mixed-Asset Portfolio

Graeme Newell

ERES from European Real Estate Society (ERES)

Abstract: UK REITs have been established since 2007, taking on increased significance in recent years as part of the global REIT markets. This paper assesses the significance, risk-adjusted performance and portfolio diversification benefits of UK REITs in a mixed-asset portfolio context in the UK over 2007-2013. The impact of the GFC on UK REITs and the post-GFC performance of UK REITs is also assessed via sub-period analysis, as well as the strategic implications for the future development of the UK REIT market.
