CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This note outlines the steps of a newly developed procedure that allows for decomposing firm and product level material input costs by four types of sourcing by using the CMF material trailer files merged at the firm and product level with the LFTTD. The four types of sourcing are: (i) domestic in-house production (i.e. domestic in-sourcing), (ii) domestic outsourcing from a third party supplier, (iii) foreign outsourcing, and (iv) foreign in-house production (i.e. foreign in-sourcing).
