¿Oportunidades para el futuro?: la movilidad social de los adolescentes en Colombia

Abstract: El objetivo de este estudio es identificar los principales determinantes de la brecha educativa de los adolescentes en Colombia y establecer cuáles son los patrones de la movilidad social de los adolescentes desde un enfoque regional. La metodología utilizada consiste en estimar regresiones de la brecha educativa y posteriormente aplicar la descomposición propuesta por Fields (1996) para determinar la importancia de los antecedentes familiares sobre los resultados de la brecha educativa. Los resultados indican que los adolescentes que provienen de hogares con padres más educados y con mayor ingreso per cápita presentan menores brechas educativas. Además, las regiones en las cuales el legado familiar explica en mayor medida las oportunidades de éxito socioeconómico de los adolescentes son Caribe, Valle del Cauca y Antioquia, las cuales corresponden a las regiones de menor movilidad.******ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is study the main determinants of the schooling gap in adolescents in Colombia and their social mobility patterns from a regional perspective. The methodology entails estimating regressions of the schooling gap of adolescents. Next, using the method proposed by Fields (1996) we estimate the importance of family background on the results of the schooling gap. The results of the research show that adolescents from households with more educated parents and higher per capita income have lower educational gaps. In addition, socioeconomic success in adolescents is explained in a higher degree by family legacy in regions such as the Caribbean Coast, Valle del Cauca and Antioquia, which turn out to be the regions with lower social mobility.
