Abstract: We seek to show that the influence of initial training on wages diminishes rapidly during the first five years of active life in France. The professional field of initial education operates as a sorting device for access to the better jobs but it does not carry a wage gain. The proximity between the professional field of education and the professional field of employment allows a higher wage gain in the first job but the benefit decreases significantly in the following jobs. The weight of experience on the wage level becomes crucial from the second job
