Abstract:
Reading a study on Chinese presences along the maritime silk route (in this specific instance in Djibouti) disturbed me, as from the introduction it clearly suggested that the former French colony's indebtedness to China was due to investments made by a Chinese company. It became clear to me that the author's point of view showed a certain conceptual confusion which very obviously obscured the writing of this article. It is the demonstration of a methodological bias affecting many studies on Sino-African relations that I have focused on in this paper.
