Are You Ready for the American Community Survey?

Liesl Eathington

Staff General Research Papers Archive from Iowa State University, Department of Economics

Abstract: With its first release of 5-year data sets for small geographic areas in December of 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau reaches an important milestone in the development of its American Community Survey (ACS). Adapting to changes introduced by the ACS framework will require some adjustment by the research community, policy-makers, the media, and other data users who have grown accustomed to using decennial census data. This report provides a brief overview of the American Community Survey (ACS). A true-false quiz allows readers who are already familiar with the ACS to test their readiness for using the 5-year estimates. The report also describes where to locate ACS data and where to find guidance in using ACS data.
