Abstract: Companies store a large amount of information over the years that are crucial to survive in the contemporary business world. Taking into account the great development of communications, and the mandatory need of sharing information with their partners, organizations can´t work as “isolated islands” anymore. Assuming that information is power, it is therefore essential to ensure its safety. There are several frameworks (ISO/IEC 27002/Mehari) that define all the measures that organizations must apply in order to implement a security information system. Still, many organizations don´t apply any measure or if they do, they merely adopt inconsistent, infrequent and unstructured measures. In this paper we try to understand how Portuguese small and medium-sized companies deal with this problem.
