Abstract:
In the European Union national accounts results - and especially first estimates - are of high political relevance. With the goal to increase timeliness, transmission periods are getting shorter and shorter. Given this background the contribution is devoted to the epistemological character of the first release of national accounts. A number of empirical examples illustrate how different - as far as their modelling content is concerned - first results are from later re-leases for the same reference period. A plea is made for a clear distinction between the vari-ous releases in official publications. Contrary to expectations of media and politicians it has to be stressed that first estimates are not comparable to later releases for the same reference period as far as the category of information provided is concerned. Statistical Institutes should actively publish sufficient meta data in order to avoid inadequate interpretation and use of national accounts data.
