Abstract: Ceftriaxone is a commonly used antibiotic to treat a range of infections, particularly for central nervous system, skin and soft tissues as well as bone and joint infections. The course length of ceftriaxone for these indications can range between 2 to 6 weeks in both hospital and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) settings. With prolonged courses being used, coupled with the general understanding that beta-lactam antibiotics are safer than other classes of antibiotics, there is a need for increasing awareness of safety of ceftriaxone, particularly on rarer but more serious adverse effects, such as neutropenia and leukopenia, which may lead to clinical complications.
