Abstract: The virus known as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) targets the immune system of the body. It impairs the immune system’s capacity to combat illnesses and infections. HIV can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and through sharing needles and syringes. The virus targets CD4 T cells, a subset of white blood cells. The ability of CD4 T cells to combat infections is crucial. HIV replicates itself by taking over the functions of the CD4 T cell and infecting it. The CD4 T cell is destroyed during this process, which also impairs the body’s ability to fight against infections.
