Abstract: Metformin, primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), improves insulin sensitivity and inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis through AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation, regulating cellular energy homeostasis. It also affects mitochondrial respiration by inhibiting complex I, thereby altering ATP production and increasing intracellular AMP levels. Despite its widespread use, metformin can cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and diarrhea.
