Abstract: This article refers to ambulant trade performed by Jewish immigrants during the first half of the twentieth century in the city of Rio de Janeiro. That practice, an important way of integration within the informal urban economy, was based upon the solidarity networks and organizations of the Jewish local community. The pedlar, by enabling lower income groups to buy on credit, gave origin to a sizeable popular market for consumption goods.
