Abstract:
This paper focuses on the urbanization process of the Province of Minas Gerais, Brazil over the 19th century. We drawn our analysis from two theories of regional economics: The central places and the systems of cities. Data on occupations gathered from census manuscripts allowed for the characterization of the urban net in 1830 and 1870. Our results show that the net of cities in Minas Gerais was still concentrated in the old mining area in the beginning of the 19th century. The main urban poles in this period were the cities of Ouro Preto and Serro. As soon as the second half of the century, the urban polarization moved to the southern part of the Province, due mainly to economic shifts. The largest poles became Juiz de Fora and Mar de Espanha. Despite these evident changes in polarization, the interior of Minas Gerais preserved most of its urban structure of the first half of the 19th century.
