Scientific and innovative activity of medical industry enterprises in Russia in the context of the prospects of its strategic development

Yu. A. Morozova ()

Russian Journal of Industrial Economics, 2026, vol. 19, issue 2

Abstract: The article deals with the comparative analysis of scientific and innovative activity of the leading medical industry enterprises of Russia and the global industry leaders from the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to achieve technological sovereignty and to increase the export potential of the domestic medical industry in the context of a large-scale import substitution. The methodological basis of the study was the theory of strategizing by Academician V.L. Kvint. It has been shown that the annual revenue of foreign giant corporations is two to three orders of magnitude larger than that of the most successful Russian companies, but their relative patent activity per employee is comparable. On the basis of Rosstat data, it has been stated that the relative growth of the total volume of domestic production of medical devices outstrips the growth of the country’s GDP. The share of Russian products in the domestic market has more than doubled since 2012, exceeding 30%. At the same time, the author has revealed continued dependence on foreign components that account for up to 40% of the cost of local equipment. It has been pointed out that from the point of view of global trends and during the period of severe sanctions restrictions, shifting the focus of applied research directly to manufacturing is becoming a key driver of the sector’s development. The author justifies the need for creating a unified digital platform for strategic management of the medical sector for predictive analytics. It has been shown that in the long-term perspective, it is the development of exports to friendly countries that can play a key role in the long-term support and scaling of domestic production.
