Polarization of Export Flows of High-Tech Products in the Context of Geopolitical Fragmentation of the World

International Trade and Trade Policy, 2026, vol. 12, issue 3

Abstract: In the context of increasing geopolitical fragmentation and technological disconnection, international trade in high-tech products demonstrates a steady polarization of export flows. Based on UN Comtrade data for 2021–2025 and the OECD (Eurostat) classification, we analyzed the dynamics of intra-group supplies across nine product categories. The author has established that regional blocs of countries react to geopolitical shocks to varying degrees in terms of reorienting export flows of high-tech products; the categories of high-tech products most  susceptible to geopolitical shocks are scientific instruments, electrical equipment, and chemical goods. The need for institutional adaptation for BRICS countries has been substantiated.  The preservation of an export-oriented development model necessitates the harmonization of technical standards, the creation of joint innovation clusters, and the implementation of preferential access mechanisms to domestic markets to reduce structural dependence on external technological centers. The results indicate a differentiated trajectory: in the Western blocs  (EU, JEMCA, G7), there is an increase in the concentration of exports of high-tech products to domestic markets, while in BRICS and ASEAN, this indicator remains low and shows a downward trend. The sectors of electrical equipment, chemical goods, and scientific instruments are the most sensitive to geopolitical tensions. The study concludes that BRICS countries need to develop coordinated institutional mechanisms to stimulate mutual trade in high-tech products and reduce their structural dependence on foreign markets.Â
