Economic Integration in the GCC in the Context of Growing Global and Regional Turbulence

A. V. Fedorchenko ()

International Trade and Trade Policy, 2026, vol. 12, issue 3

Abstract: In the context of a sharp qualitative increase in turbulence and its persistence in the Middle East region for an indefinite period, the need to understand how the current situation affects the metamorphosis of the integration process in the countries of the Cooperation Council for the GCC is becoming urgent. The purpose of the article is to identify the main directions of the development of integration processes in the GCC and their specifics under the influence of the growing complex of regional threats. The research hypothesis is that the current situation will significantly accelerate the integration process and serve as a catalyst for a change in its direction, both within the region and in the interaction between the GCC countries and third countries, in both geographical and sectoral terms. The methodological base of the study includes a comprehensive analysis of statistical data from international organizations, reports from industry agencies, and empirical materials on the countries of the region. The study revealed that regional economic integration remains important for the member countries of the association, and the dynamics of these relations are determined by two opposing trends. On the one hand, there is an understanding that maintaining a certain level of stability in the Persian Gulf region requires establishing good-neighborly relations both within the association and with third countries. On the other hand, the regional ambitions of the leading countries are exacerbating the struggle for influence in the Middle East, involving the small GCC member countries in it.Â
