Abstract:
Free living amoebae (FLA) are opportunistic protozoa which are widely spread in our environment. Among these, three genera Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia and Naegleria are responsible for life threatening human brain infections involving central nervous system (CNS) with poor diagnosis. This is also contributed to poor understanding of the pathogenicity of FLA and limited availability of therapeutic options against them. The purpose of this review is to document the medicinal plants used against free living amoeba and critically review the literature on the anti-FLA properties of folk plants against emerging FLA infections. Information regarding FLA was collected from scientific databases like PubMed and scientific literatures based on published papers from Elsevier, Springer, Wiley publishers. An in-depth analysis of previous studies was undertaken and future prospective is considered..
