Abstract: Characterization, classification, and evaluation of groundwater in and around the open cast mining of clay deposits of Thonnakkal, South India have been studied. The impact studied include changes happened to the qualitative and quantitative aspects related to the ground water. It is found that changes occurred in depth to the water level (decline of water level), lowering pH of ground water in the area, high sulfate and trace metals in the ground water. The groundwater of the area comes under Na+-HCO3- type and shallow meteoric percolation type and the scatter diagram of Ca2+ +Mg2+ vs HCO3 − + SO42− revealed that majority of samples in the season and different geological terrain fall below the equiline, indicating that silicate weathering was the primary process involved in the evolution of groundwater
