Livelihood Dynamism in Mining Region of Odisha, India

Abstract: The present paper attempts to analyse the dynamism in the livelihood strategies of local population due to mining operations in Odisha, India. The study is based on primary data collected by administering a structured surveyed schedule on the 180 respondents from four villages within the periphery of an iron ore mine. Techniques like F-test; t-test and regression analysis has been used in the present paper. Mining do influence the livelihood strategies of local population. This dynamism in livelihood system has resulted in net monetary economic gain to the local population. Further, proximity of village to the mine site plays an important role in determining these net monetary economic gains due to mining. But, it would be difficult to continue those benefits since the life span of a mine is fixed. Hence, this calls for policy interventions that can lead to sustainable and enhancement of livelihood system for the local population.
