Abstract: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a tool being used to ensure environmentally sound and sustainable project implementation. Initially it was used in the USA in 1969 and recognizing its effectiveness in curbing of the environmental effects of development projects, its application was adopted by the other countries of the world. It was endorsed by the 1972 Stockholm conference, WECD1989, Rio Earth Summit 1992 and further reinforced by 2002 Johannesburg conference.
